Band Dinner and Dance
The band held their annual dinner and dance and awards ceremony on Saturday 2nd December at
The Griffin Inn, Newquay.
Congratulations go to Kayleigh Mitchell who picked up the Player of the Year and Best Performance of the Year, Andy Mitchell for Silkiest Player, Steve Hawkey who won Bandsman of the Year, Mike Brown for Most Improved Player, and to our Trombone Section Mike Brown, Harriet Teagle, Ben Orchard, and Mike Hall who were awarded the Best Section award.
A great evening was had by all!
South West Brass Band Association Contest
Under the baton of Musical Director Darren Hendy, we were delighted to gain 6th place out of a strong field of 12 at the South West Brass Band Association Contest on Saturday 4th November, playing Eric Ball's
Journey into Freedom.
Congratulations go to all of the soloists who performed magnificently, and also to Camborne on their well deserved win!
Roche Brass were delighted to be a part of the fabulous Sterts Theatre Last Night of the Proms on
Saturday 9th September, playing to a full house of 400 people!
The proceeds of the concert were split between 2 charities, with £1,000 going to the bands chosen charity of RNLI St. Ives, and £2,243 to Sterts chosen charity CHICKS.
This is a wonderful amount of money to raise for 2 very worthy charities, and we were very proud to play our part in this, along with the fantastic Sterts Singers, and vocalist Kate Walker.
A huge thank you to Sterts Theatre for organising such an amazing night!
Debut CD Launched!
We are delighted to announce that our debut CD entitled 'Upon Roche Rock' is now available to purchase for just £10 plus packaging and postage!
The CD was recorded at the end of April under the baton of guest conductor David Hirst and features a wide range of music for all tastes, as well as a number of the bands soloists and a new composition by Steven Ponsford entitled 'Upon Roche Rock'.

All England International Masters
Under the baton of Musical Advisor Garry Cutt, we were delighted to gain 7th place at the
All England International Masters on Sunday 28th May against some of the top bands in the world!
This was our first time at the contest, playing Peter Graham's The Torchbearer, and is the highest place any Cornish band has ever achieved at the contest!

Finally a big thank you to Garry for leading the band once again, and congratulations to Milnrow on their well deserved win!
New Chairman Appointed
Roche Brass are delighted to announce the appointment of our new Chairman, Councillor John Wood.
John has represented the Roche division as the local Councillor for a number of years, as well as holding the position of Chairman of Cornwall Council, and has supported the band from the outset back in 2012.
When the position of Chairman of the band became available, we therefore had no doubt as to who we wanted to fill the role, and were delighted when John accepted the position in
John has a vast amount of experience in funding and leadership skills through his time as
local Councillor and Chairman of Cornwall Council which we hope will be of huge benefit in
driving the band forward.
New Musical Director Appointed
Roche Brass would like to announce the appointment of Darren Hendy as its new
Darren began playing the cornet with Porthleven Town Band aged 8 under the guidance of Stanley Oliver and Henry Medlin. He joined Camborne Town Band at the age of 14 where he received tuition from Edward Ashton and Albert Chappell. Upon leaving school he joined the famous GUS band who were British Open Champions. Darren later returned to Cornwall in 1989 where he held the principal cornet position with St. Dennis Band.
In 1991 Darren moved back to Camborne band as principal cornet where he retained this position for 8 years. He enjoyed many happy and successful times with the band and won several prestigious solo awards at numerous competitions throughout the country.
During his time at both St. Dennis and Camborne he played under the baton of Derek Greenwood whose musical talent and ability has had a long lasting influence on him.
On many occasions Darren has had the opportunity to play under a number of great conductors such as Bramwell Tovey, Frank Renton, Leonard Adams, Steve Sykes and John Berryman. Furthermore, he has been fortunate enough to have played with some of the country’s top bands including Grimethorpe, Cory, Fodens and Brighouse and Rastrick.
Darren said; 'I am delighted to embark on this new challenge as musical director of Roche Brass and am looking forward to a happy, successful future with the band.'
Band Manager, Richard Hawkey said; ‘We are absolutely delighted that Darren has accepted our invitation to become our new Musical Director. The players were very impressed with the work that he did in preparation for Garry Cutt to come in and lead the band at the recent West of England Regionals. Darren is a musician of the very highest quality and we are all looking forward to working with him in taking the band forward.'
Musical Advisor, Garry Cutt added: 'We are all delighted here at Roche to have secured the services of such an experienced person as Darren. I'm sure he will be a great asset to the band on a week to week basis. I very much look forward to working with him.'
