Musical Director - Matthew Green
Matthew began his musical life playing piano and cornet under the guidance of Brian Watson. He moved on to the euphonium at the age of ten, and was a founder member of the Newstead Youth Band in Nottingham.
Matthew chose to pursue a career in music, joining the Royal Marines Band Service at the age of 16 as a Euphonium and Cello player. After completing his training early he joined the Portsmouth band where he travelled all over the world, most notably Dubai, Jamaica and performing to armed forces in Afghanistan. He has since served in Scotland Band, Plymouth Band, and is currently part of the Band at the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone.
2015 saw Matthew given the opportunity to conduct Hatherleigh Silver Band in Devon. This proved to be a fruitful partnership which, under his direction, the band won three consecutive West of England Brass Band Association (WEBBA) Regional Championships in 2016, 2017, and 2018. These wins were backed up by a Third and Sixth place at the National Finals. In 9 years with the Band Matthew helped Hatherleigh to progress from the 4th Section, to their highest ever position in the 1st Section.
Matthew has trained professionally in conducting, gaining an LRSM in Wind Band Direction (Distinction) whilst on the RM Bandmasters course. At the end of the year-long course he achieved a Distinguished Star pass, averaging over 90% in all elements of the course, including Conducting, Harmony, History and Composition. Upon completion of the course Matthew attended the Orchestral Conducting Course at the Sherborne Summer Music School, and was subsequently offered private tutorship from internationally renowned conductor and founder of the London Conducting Academy Denise Ham.
Matthew also regularly conducts other brass Bands, Wind bands, and Orchestras in the South West, Midlands and Yorkshire. He lives in Teignmouth with his wife Alice, Daughter Lily and dog Pippa.
